Close to Semmelweis – Night of Museums at Semmelweis Museum of Medical History

Date: 2018-06-24

1818-2018. Two hundred years have elapsed since the birth of the saviour of mothers, Ignác Semmelweis. At this year’s Night of Museums, the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History presents Semmelweis’s figure and legacy with new perspectives and varied programmes, bringing him closer. Visitors can walk in the building of the museum, the former home of the Semmelweis family. Several pieces of the never-before-seen Semmelweis legacy can also be viewed on a curatorial guided tour. This night, the past collides with the present: at the exhibition on the birth of obstetrics, Dr. Zsolt Melczer, obstetrician-gynaecologist will share his thoughts. In addition to walking and the historical exhibitions, contemporary fine art will also be part of the evening: Beáta Szabó painting artist will step forward from behind her works and will show the mysteries of her artistic world, the traditions and subjective approaches of the exhibited bodies in an exclusive conversation. On the occasion of the Semmelweis Memorial Year, Benedek Varga, Director General of the Hungarian National Museum, will speak about the topic of the legacy of Ignác Semmelweis in his lecture in the cosy garden of the museum, which, in addition to being a pearl of Buda, is also the resting place of the remains of Ignác Semmelweis. As a true tradition of the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History, the Night of Museums is closed with music: Attila Környei guitar artist’s concert welcomes the audience.
